The New Mattress
May 8, 2008 by Amy
Once upon a time, I was heinously pregnant and uncomfortable on our old bed, so we bought this one

It’s a TempurPedic and I found it oh, so comfortable. So did Husband. Until his shoulder started hurting and he decided to blame the bed. I blamed the sleeper. But either way, our penitent’s bed, as he called it, was on its way out.
I managed to hold out for two years, because I was doing just fine, and hey, beds? A good chunk of change.
Well, he’d finally had enough, so we went out bed shopping, My bad luck, it was that time of year when all the mattress places have everything on sale (Early-Mid April…handy shopping tip, that). Not only did we get a screamin’ good sale price to start with, that weekend Kings were beings sold for the same sale price as the Queens. And free delivery. How could we pass that up?
So now, we have this

A nice, plush, pillow top mattress. It feels like crawling into the warmest, softest embrace. Like a night in an expensive hotel. I was really excited the day this was delivered.
A Few Problems
First, it’s a Standard/Eastern King. Which meant it was wider than our old California King. On the upside, we can now walk into any store and find sheets that fit (in Oregon, Cal King sheets must be special ordered). On the downside? We had to get rid of my bedside dresser. My alarm clock is on the floor. I literally have to fall out of bed to turn it off. Fair, right?
Second, that nice plush top? It slopes at the edges. Leaving The Mattress Gap. Trust me, we can’t get this thing any closer to the wall…we’ve tried. A lot.

Guess what winds up in The Mattress Gap….that’s right, my pillow. That thing that’s supposed to support my head and help keep my neck and upper spine aligned so it doesn’t hurt in the morning? Yeah, totally not working when it’s in The Mattress Gap. For the last two days, I’ve barely been able to move, my neck and shoulders are so sore.
Third, we sleep with two comforters, and when Husband gets too hot, he just pushes the extra comforter off himself and into the middle and towards the foot of the bed . Except now, with the sloping edges, the thing slides onto the floor. So I am freezing. Yes, I know it’s spring. Get over it. It’s frickin’ cold at night. Remember? We had snow two weeks ago.
Husband, of course, notices none of this. He’s too busy sleeping to be aware of my discomfort.
I’m going to stuff a blanket into The Mattress Gap and see if that helps. Because if it doesn’t, I’m not sure what to do next. Any and all suggestions welcome.
How are you sleeping these nights?
I was looking at TempurPedic beds, but your pillow-top looks comfy. I can’t think of a solution for you at the moment.
I’m sleeping good once sleeps takes over.
I always wanted a TempurPedic. Looking at the beds makes me want to hop back in mine. Good luck!
Hey cool… everything is in italics! LOL…
Sleep? ME? Nah… Between DH and the dog I get precious little.
Good luck!
Marianne: it was totally not supposed to be ALL in italics. Not sure what happened between the time I hit “Publish” and the time you saw it. It should be fixed now. Does your dog bark at night?
Did you got back to bed, Keri?
Dru: You can now get regular, innerspring mattresses with a TempurPedic Pillow Top….The best of both worlds? They’re firmer than the straight pillow top, but not as minimalist as a straight TempurPedic.
I think your DH is crazy. *g* I have a pillowtop and I hate it. I want a memory foam mattress so bad I can hardly stand it.
I have a CA king and here in the East, it’s hard to find sheets, too. In between that space? um, either a headboard or an extra pillow that won’t slip down alltogether should work. We have a pillowtop and I love it. As for the comforter thing? Sleep with your own blanket. Seriously. Hubs and I each have our own blankets ’cause the stinker steals them. *G* Good luck!
Enjoy your new mattress in spite of the gap and the slope!
I’m so tired I fall asleep sitting up. I’m sleeping just fine these days!
Um…I plan on trading in our pillowtop for a TempurPedic as soon as I get a chance…the pillowtop makes my hips hurt, though HubbaBubba blames it on the pregnancy.
Jenna: my joints hurting during pregnancy was the REASON we bought the TempurPedic. It saved me during the pregnancy. Within three nights, I would wake up pain free. It was amazing. Though won’t you be done with the pregnancy soon?
Melissa: I’m considering sleeping on the couch tonight. I really dislike the bed. A lot. And now I’ve got a bad attitude about it.
Brandy: when we took the kids to Europe, we each had our own blanket (pseudo-sleeping bag, with the blanket fold in the middle of the bed for each of us), and it was WONDERFUL. We’ll call that Plan B. Which I’ll need. Plan A does not appear to be working.
We have a sleep number bed. Works just fine for us!
[...] I’m very sore, but in weird places. I expected to be sore in my back, shoulders or neck from all the twisting and working to keep my shoulders down (instead of up around my ears). Nope. It’s the backs of my thighs, and my ankles. But Thursday night, after my first attempt at yoga? Slept like the dead. Even on the new mattress. [...]
